In Cambodia, people with disabilities are among the most vulnerable and impoverished groups. They have very limited access to basic social services, education, vocational training, and income opportunities, which exacerbates their poverty. Among people with disabilities, some groups have been more marginalized than others, particularly women, girls, and children with disabilities.
The Kampuchea Sela Handicap association aims to support people with intellectual disabilities towards independence, train a new generation of specialized educators on issues related to intellectual disability in adults, and raise awareness of intellectual disability in society. Since 2014, the association has operated a jam and syrup production workshop called "L'Irrésistible" (The Irresistible), where young Cambodian adults with intellectual disabilities work. Ultimately, thanks to the income generated by this workshop and other activities, the association hopes to become self-sustaining and be able to provide long-term support to the people who work there. To achieve this, the association plans to professionalize the jam-making workshop, which prepares participants for employment and allows them to progress towards independence and integration within Cambodian society.
