Renovation of water and hygiene facilities in a primary school in a Moroccan municipality

Dynam'eau Association

Context

Morocco, facing a silent water crisis with only 500 cubic meters of fresh water available per capita, is officially classified as water-stressed by the UN. In the rural commune of Sidi Boubker El Haj, near Kenitra, this reality manifests itself in women and children traveling kilometers each day to fetch water from surrounding wells, at the expense of their education. While the region benefits from a climate favorable to agriculture, which has been booming since 2021, the increasing pressure on water resources exacerbates the precarious situation of a population already grappling with unemployment.

At the Lana Ranou school, the sanitation facilities built by the Dynam'eau association in 2016 are no longer sufficient to meet current needs: the number of students has doubled since their installation. Several toilets and sinks are now unusable, limiting access to adequate hygiene and facilitating the transmission of certain diseases within the school. This situation also impacts their education, particularly for girls: the lack of functional and suitable facilities, combined with the stigma and shame associated with menstruation, complicates their daily life at school and can affect their attendance.

This new project is part of the ongoing relationship with Sidi Boubker El Haj. With fifteen years of expertise in water sanitation and three projects already carried out in Morocco, the Dynam'eau association is joining forces with residents and local stakeholders, including the ANWAR association, to design a sustainable solution, conceived with and for the community.
