Renewable energy and agroforestry in Abadah

Evry Gregy Mauritania

Context

Responsible agricultural development is among the priorities of the Mauritanian government.’agroforestry It contributes to this effort by combating climate change. This technique helps to preserve soil fertility, water resources, and prevent soil erosion.

The municipality of Jidrel Moghen is made up of several villages, including that of Abadah, and that of Fass. In the latter, a 4ha plot was rehabilitated and cultivated using the "agroforestry" method, and yielded good results.

The Abadah Women's Cooperative The cooperative is composed of 75 women, 701 of whom are between 30 and 40 years old. Approval to open a solidarity shop was obtained in 2013 to resell various products supplied by the cooperative, such as food products and also veils dyed by cooperative members. The women of the cooperative wish to extend their craft activities to market gardening, highly motivated by the results in Fass, thanks to this project carried out in partnership with the French association Evry Gregy Mauritania. The cooperative owns 5 hectares of land, 1 hectare of which is used for agroforestry within the project. The objective is to increase the income of each woman in the cooperative, so that they have a improved access to health and education for young people. This project also aims to ensure a Food and nutritional security of families thanks to a wider variety of consumable products (vegetable produce, fruit trees and legumes).

L'’irrigation This is at the heart of the project to rehabilitate the 1-hectare plot of land for agroforestry. Currently, irrigation relies on rainwater and a well located on the property, but the women have to draw water from the well using buckets. Installing a pump powered by photovoltaic panels on the well will facilitate irrigation and help develop and sustain the crops.
