Apiculture Flore Développement (APIFLORDEV)

Context

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2011, The Saloum Delta is a natural environment with great biodiversity. This has allowed the emergence of activities such as gathering (mangrove oysters, honey), cultivation and livestock farming (vegetables, cereals, livestock).

To cope with population growth, new techniques have enabled the development of these productions and the emergence of small-scale market gardening, oyster farming, beekeeping…

It is in this context that it appeared modern beekeeping based on the use of frame or top-bar hives.

In Dassilamé, the first training sessions to use these modern beehives were organised in 2008. And, apiaries were installed in villages along the Toubacouta – Karang axis.

Particularly suited to the context of the Saloum Delta, the bee Apis mellifera adansonii It provides good results in terms of production and resistance to pests and predators. present in colonies such as the wax moth, the varroa mite and the small hive beetle.

Given the results obtained, the villages New areas in the Saloum Delta have called upon Apiflordev and AIVDD to develop beekeeping activities. which addresses the dual objective of generating income for village populations while protecting the biodiversity of the mangrove and forest areas surrounding the villages.
