Wings for the Future: Sustainable livestock farming in Djamdé serving school canteens

INDIGO

Context

In Togo, chronic malnutrition affects nearly 301,000 children, a higher rate in rural areas, which causes serious consequences for children's health, as well as for their cognitive development and affects their academic success.

In this context, the Togolese association A3E has notably set up 4 school canteens in the canton of Djamdé.

Since 2021, a 20 hectares of agricultural land was donated to the NGO A3E by the chief of the Djamdé canton and the mayor of the Atchangbadé commune, to thank the association for its work in the commune over the past fifteen years. On this land, a solar-powered well pump, Equipped with 3 water tanks, it allows for the irrigation of crops, essential to the agroecological production in place.

In 2023-2024, A3E and INDIGO have developed an agricultural activity on 6 hectares of fruit trees and 1 hectare of market gardening, constituting a primary source of income to support school canteens, a project supported by La Guilde in 2023. However, This production alone does not yet allow us to achieve in the short term the financial autonomy necessary to ensure a daily meal for all schoolchildren throughout the year.

To ensure the sustainability of school canteens without depending on external donations, a chicken coop with 200 broiler chickens will be set up.
