THE Maasai are a population of semi-nomadic pastoralists and warriors from East Africa, living mainly in Kenya and in Tanzania currently. Throughout time, the Maasai perpetuate their cultural traditions while trying to adapt to contemporary economic, social, and political forces. They try to live according to their ancestral way of life despite barriers which they face on a daily basis.
The village of Alailelai, located in the conservation area of Ngorongoro In Tanzania, it is populated mainly by indigenous Maasai people. For the past few decades, conservation area regulations have been favorable to the expansion of tourism, imposing restrictions on the use of natural resources, which prevents the Maasai from engaging in their activities of traditional subsistence : livestock farming and agriculture. The global warming and the drought The problems it generates also contribute to weakening the economic and social balance of families. Furthermore, although the Arusha region is developing the water network, it does not reach the most remote areas, thus leaving the Maasai people in need. always forced to travel long distances to to obtain water, while taking into account that drilling is not always a reliable water resource, sometimes found dry or destroyed by animalsx.
Of the cultural exchanges Discussions were therefore launched between representatives of the local Maasai people and the Explorers of Nature association to find solutions. A project to install a water recovery system will be installed in the village, with the main objective of to make daily life easier for the women of the village by saving them from having to walk several kilometers from the village to fetch water.
