Siembrate Siloé 2021

Join a Town

Context

Siloé is the municipality where the project is located. It lies southwest of the city of Cali in Colombia. 80% of the territory developed through illegal urbanization, resulting in forced displacement from rural areas to cities between the 1980s and 2010s. The socio-political context of Siloé is quite fragile. State failures and a lack of health and education institutions prevent the guarantee of decent living conditions for its residents. These conditions of vulnerability, coupled with the absence of social cohesion, fuel waves of violence in the neighborhoods.

Due to local customs and low purchasing power, the inhabitants of Siloé do not have a balanced diet. A growing problem of overweight and obesity among children has been identified.

In 2018, the Join a Town association and its partner Fundacion DINOS created an urban agriculture program with the installation of a vertical community garden in the municipal library where 120 students and a group of elderly people were trained.

This project aims to provide training in agriculture, management and
entrepreneurship, aimed at recovering and appreciating the ancestral agricultural knowledge of the community's elders, as well as developing family vegetable gardens.
