Rice and honey in Sansando

Guinea-Cornwall Association

Context

The village of Sansando is located in a remote area of Upper Guinea and has a population of 1,400. Agriculture is the main activity. Some of the young people leave during the dry season to work in the gold mines, several hundred kilometers from the village, and return during the rainy season for agricultural activities.

Because of the area's isolation, agriculture has remained mainly subsistence-based, but food needs are not fully met, either in quantity – the population consumes imported rice from August to November – or in quality – vegetable production is not very diversified.

During the dry season, the female farmers of Sansando use land along the Mafou River to do some market gardening during the dry season.

APEK-Agriculture and Guinea-Cornwall are mobilizing to strengthen the technical and structural capacities of the village, so that producers can better organize themselves and train to maintain the hydro-agricultural facilities of their 10-hectare lowlands, increase their rice production and develop sustainable agriculture in order to achieve self-sufficiency and increase their income.

Project objectives

To professionalize the farmers of Sansando in order to increase and diversify their food self-sufficiency and income

To train and support farmers in the rehabilitation, maintenance and management of water control structures

Training farmers, technically and economically, for sustainable agriculture in rice cultivation, market gardening and beekeeping

Supporting farmers in structuring a formal and functional professional organization

Activities

Lowland rehabilitation: action-oriented training for farmers to construct small retention structures, dig canals and drains, build dikes, install storage cells, and then maintain the structures by the farmers.

Setting up, training and supporting a management committee

Technical agricultural training in sustainable practices: improved rice farming practices, agroecology, sustainable beekeeping

Support for the acquisition of agricultural equipment (animal traction, beekeeping equipment)

Support for the establishment of plots according to agroecological practices

Training and support in the technical and economic management of individual and collective farms (advice to family farms) by volunteer farmers

Literacy in the local language (Malinke)

Direct beneficiaries

56 farmers (34 women and 22 men) from the village, members of two groups based in Sansando, volunteered to cultivate the lowland, to engage in market gardening and beekeeping activities, and to receive training at the same time.
