Relocation of the Nepalese village of Dhye, victim of global warming

Bessin Association in Nepal

Context

The village of Dhye in the Upper Mustang region, located at an altitude of 4000m, having already lost more than 60% of its arable land which can no longer be irrigated due to lack of snow on the heights, is officially recognized as a victim of global warming by the WWF and the Nepalese government. After numerous studies and research, it was concluded that the only possibility to save Dhye is to move the village to another site: Thangchung, on the edge of important rivers and used for centuries by the villagers of Dhye as winter pasture.

Forced to relocate their village, the residents of Dhye seized the problem and adapted it to turn it into an opportunity for village development. They pooled their resources and began creating an apple orchard. French professionals then joined the group and initiated a process to professionalize the villagers in fruit growing, with nearly 30 tons harvested in 2022.

Over the years, numerous buildings have been constructed: a school, a dispensary, the Village Office, and numerous houses. However, nine houses remain to be built to complete the relocation of the village of Dhye and its sustainable economic activity, a victim of global warming.
