Providing first aid training in schools: health at the heart of cooperation between Reunion and Madagascar

Tsiky Majunga Association

The Tsiky association ("the smile" in Malagasy) was created in April 2012 by a group of doctors from the Gabriel Martin Hospital in Saint Paul, Réunion Island. Its goal is to provide regular and sustainable healthcare support to children in primary schools in the city of Majunga, on the west coast of Madagascar. In 2021, 4,340 children across six public primary schools benefited from the Tsiky association's program, which focuses on: daily access to free medical consultations; regular medical visits to schools in Majunga; malnutrition prevention; access to free dental care in partnership with the IOSTM (dental school) in Majunga; on-the-ground medical training; infrastructure renovation; school and extracurricular activities; and welcoming volunteers from all backgrounds to encourage the sharing of experiences. .

Context

First aid at the Majunga school

In the Boeny region, the remoteness of health centers makes domestic and school accidents a major cause of infant mortality. Faced with these challenges, the project led by the Tsiky association, active in Majunga since 2012, aims to improve children's safety by strengthening access to emergency care. By integrating risk prevention and first aid into daily school life, it positions the school as a strategic entry point for improving community health, making a lasting contribution to reducing inequalities in access to healthcare in rural and isolated areas of Majunga.

  • Training teachers and local nurses in first aid techniques
  • Equip schools and local health centers with sustainable first aid kits
  • Raising children's awareness of home accident prevention and life-saving techniques
