Since 2009, in Tamil Nadu, India, the Dhan Karunai Illam orphanage in Nilakottai, established by the Dhan Foundation in partnership with organizations including the Association for International Solidarity and Education (ASIE), has been providing care for orphaned, abandoned, or destitute children, as well as children removed from their families due to poverty or illness. The orphanage has grown and become more structured over the years, expanding from 10 to 45 children aged 12 to 18 (or older if necessary), thanks to the construction of two buildings (dormitories, common rooms, kitchen, classrooms, reception area, garden, and fencing).
Taking in children aged 6 to 12 is necessary due to high infant mortality rates in the region's villages. Without care, food, or educational support, they are left to fend for themselves, often exploited, abused, and thrown into the streets; many do not survive or develop serious physical and/or psychological problems.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of children in need of care has only increased, especially as food is scarce in some villages, with farmers suffering from climate change with severe periods of drought or flooding that destroy crops and villages.
To create a suitable environment for welcoming and educating orphans aged between 6 and 12 years old within the Dhan Karunai Illam orphanage in Nilakottai, Tamil Nadu, India
Establish infrastructure suitable for accommodating very young orphaned children
To provide quality educational and social support to orphaned children between the ages of 6 and 12, as well as a gradual integration with the other older residents of the orphanage
Construction of 3 small houses
Installation of solar panels on houses for their electrical self-sufficiency
Landscaping around the houses with a playground and plants
Recruitment and training over 3 months of 3 "nursing mothers" focusing in particular on supporting children in essential daily life activities, hygiene and safety rules, and facilitating children's social life to develop their autonomy and well-being.
18 orphaned children aged 6 to 12 who live within a 50km radius of the Nilakottai orphanage
Three women, acting as "nursing mothers," will live in the houses to create a "family" unit, similar to a foster family.
