Fight against cholera at the Londji school in Kribi

Around Water for a Sustainable Horizon

Context

In Cameroon, the construction of drinking water distribution centers and networks has not kept pace with the exponential population growth. This is the case for schools in the Kribi district and the Londji primary and nursery school, which accommodate
nearly 600 students.

In 2005, the National Action Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management (PANGIRE) was launched, but the resources allocated to this program remain limited. Villages on the outskirts of Kribi's city center cannot benefit from the inadequate public water distribution system. Most villagers fetch water directly from the river, leading to health problems and water shortages during the dry season. This is also the case for students at the Londji school complex.

The association Autour de l'Eau and its local partner, GIC MADIBA M MBOA, have, since their creation, aimed to provide access to drinking water for disadvantaged populations in Kribi, Cameroon, and especially for schoolchildren. The Londji school project is part of a long-term intervention approach. In this way, each project is enriched by the lessons learned from previous experiences.

Beyond a technical and health response, the aim is more broadly and sustainably to significantly reduce the recurrence of waterborne diseases by facilitating access to drinking water and sanitation and by conducting hygiene education in parallel, linking it to health.

Project objectives

  • To improve qualitatively and quantitatively the conditions of access to drinking water for students of the school, the educational community and the population living near the school.
  • Preventing cholera epidemics and improving the health of students and the educational community.
  • Develop a participatory approach with users of the equipment in order to facilitate the sustainability of the facilities and promote a local development process.

Activities

  • Training students and teachers on the proper use and maintenance of equipment and the sharing of tasks.
  • Construction of an educational garden including a rainwater collector, plantings and a compost.
  • Drilling, construction and installation of the pump.
  • Installation of dry toilets with separation to transform waste into natural fertilizers.

Direct beneficiaries

  • 2000 beneficiaries including school children, the educational community, and residents near the school site.
