Educational monitoring of children and empowerment of women in Mriwat

Leo for the World

Context

Mriwat is a village of approximately 350 inhabitants located in the High Atlas Mountains., 80 km south of Marrakech, in the Al Haouz province of Morocco. Families there live mainly from agriculture and the small business, with modest incomes. September 2023 earthquake has significantly exacerbated their vulnerability. In particular, it has damaged preschool center managed in the village by the Moroccan association Assafou for Development, who had to organize a mobile classroom to ensure the continuity of childcare. While almost all the children in the village are enrolled in school, many struggle with basic learning. The classes are overcrowded, and no academic support programs exist outside of school., and the’Access to educational and digital tools remains very limited. Furthermore, a large proportion of the women in the village cannot read or write, This limits their autonomy and their ability to support their children's education. These needs were expressed by families and relayed by Assafou, which has been active in the region since 2011. The association has partnered with Leo for the World to address this. A village association is generously providing the land for the future center.
