Avovo Copé is a rural village of approximately 1,250 inhabitants located in the commune of Haho 3, in the Plateaux region, about a hundred kilometers from Lomé, at Togo. Its inhabitants live mainly from subsistence farming and livestock breeding. The village has no source of drinking water.. Women and children travel approximately [distance] each day. 1.5 km to draw water from a tributary of the Yoto River. Despite attempts at artisanal filtration, this water remains unfit for consumption. During its visits to the village, the mobile clinic of the’Togolese NGO ACDI noted numerous cases of waterborne diseases, such as typhoid and parasitic infections. The burden of fetching water also impacts children's schooling and the time women can dedicate to income-generating activities. At the municipal level, nearly a quarter of the water infrastructure is out of service due to lack of maintenance, highlighting the importance of sound community management. It was at the request of the residents that CIDA designed this project, with the support of the’Young Talent association, Build By Sport, his partner since 2022.
The direct beneficiaries are the 1250 inhabitants of the village of Avovo Copé and its surroundings.
