Development of a public Peripheral Healthcare Unit in Goka Copé, Togo

Association for Solidarity with Children of Togo (ASET)

Context

The village of Goka Copé in Togo and its 11,000 inhabitants lack electricity due to its remoteness from power grids. The population of the village and surrounding areas is growing, but there is no health center nearby, despite the fact that local healthcare is a need expressed by both the community and the Kovié town hall.

The Association Solidarité Enfants du Togo (ASET) has been present in the village since 2009, the year the Goka Copé school was established as a secular "private" school, recognized by the Togolese state in 2017. The school building was constructed in 2018, allowing for the implementation of classes.
adult literacy in the village.

From 2021 to 2022, ASET carried out several other projects to develop the village's self-sufficiency in education and healthcare. These included the construction of a semi-buried cistern supplied by rainwater harvesting from the school building and a building intended to house a Peripheral Care Unit (PCU). School buildings and a kindergarten were electrified in partnership with Assistance Energie France. Additionally, a water filter was installed at the school and for a future PCU to provide potable water.

A new project is being implemented by the ASET association in partnership with the Komla Project Association to renovate the building constructed to install a type 1 PSU. This peripheral care unit is integrated into the 5 PSUs set up locally, and is attached to the type 2 one in Kovié.
