Creation of a field for the benefit of a private community health and social promotion center

Care and Life Association

Context

Burkina Faso, a West African country, is among the poorest countries in the world. With an estimated population of 20.5 million and a population growth rate of 2,941 per 1,000 inhabitants per year, the challenges in terms of access to healthcare, nutrition, and employment are significant. Zorgho, located in the Ganzourgou province 100 km east of Ouagadougou, faces a worrying health and social situation. In 2016, the town had 27,400 inhabitants, a figure that reached 40,100 in 2019. The town's only Health and Social Promotion Center (CSPS), which is under-equipped, struggles to meet the growing needs of a rapidly increasing population. For several years, the Care and Life association has been collaborating with local stakeholders on health and development projects. Between 2017 and 2023, a project to build a private community health center (CSPS) was launched in partnership with the Association Solidarité Plus (ASP) and the Association des Jeunes Unis de Ganzourgou (AJUG). Thanks to funding, also provided by partners such as the Pierre Fabre Foundation and Solidarité Santé Navale, maternity wards, pharmacies, and numerous other medical facilities were built. However, access to healthy food remains a major problem. Based on this, work began in 2017 to create a market garden. None of the health centers in the region have a canteen, and some patients are forced to interrupt their treatment due to a lack of food. To address this issue, a project to develop a one-hectare farm was conceived. It aims to support the future food supply for the health center canteen while generating income that can be used to help finance healthcare and train young farmers in sustainable agricultural techniques.
