Construction of a three-classroom module with toilets

Education Schooling Alsace Benin (ESAB)

Context

In Benin, a tradition dictated that families in precarious situations placed their children with close relatives or friends who were better off, so that the latter would guarantee the child's opportunity to attend school and receive training. Although banned for about twenty years, this practice has led to abuses: children have been placed with families in exchange for a monthly payment to their parents. These children, known as vidomègons, then no longer have the opportunity to attend school or receive training. Girls are particularly affected by this phenomenon. School dropout is also high, especially among children from precarious families.

Parents of students in Koletin, whose children have to travel several kilometers to get to school, have approached the Beninese association Sonagnon to help create a school. The Strasbourg association Education Scolarisation Alsace Bénin (ESAB), which has been working with the Sonagnon association for over three years, is working to meet this demand.
