Let Us Unite for the Future of Humanity

Context

In Bukavu, the capital from South Kivu, In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a large part of the population lives in the informal economy. In the city markets, many women, often single mothers, work as porters. They are nicknamed the "« women's cargo »They transport loads of 30 to 100 kg daily over long distances, earning $1 to $3 per day. This work leads to serious health problems, such as lumbar and joint pathologies or gynecological complications. It also exposes them to thefts and assaults, without no social protection. The context of prolonged conflicts in the east of the country further exacerbates their vulnerability. A field assessment conducted by the coordinator of the local association UNAH-DRC, herself a doctor, revealed a These women have a clear demand: to pursue a less strenuous, more stable and safer activity. However, the markets of Bukavu lack a simple and affordable food service. Street food thus appears as an accessible and suitable alternative to local demand. The French association UNAH relies on its partner UNAH-DRC, created in 2018, which has already supported several income-generating projects led by women: sewing training, a beehive-school, and a school canteen.
