The commune of Marmont, in Haiti, in the Central department, comprises 24 small localities, including Hatte Cantave where the members of the Utopia Ayiti peasant group live.
The rural area of Marmont is not affected by the very serious security problems that Haiti is currently experiencing, which are mainly taking place in the larger cities.
The farmers of Hatte Cantave have come together in a cooperative, where each family cultivates its own garden and shares agricultural land. Begun in 2018 with the help of the Hercule Haiti association, the pooling of agricultural and poultry production resources has enabled the cooperative to achieve food self-sufficiency, increase production, and sell surpluses in surrounding markets.
The payment of school fees for the children in the group became possible thanks to the significant improvement in the income level of the families belonging to the farmers' group. Since Hatte Cantave has no school within 3km, and aware of the importance of education in local and national decision-making, the members of the group wanted to develop a school in their village for their children, so that they would have access to education.
