Morija France

Context

The prefecture of Doufelgou, in the region of Kara, north of Togo, faces significant environmental and social challenges. Soils and vegetation cover are degrading due to deforestation., slash-and-burn agriculture and erosion, exacerbated by climate change. Agricultural yields are falling in an area where the population lives almost entirely off agriculture. The poverty rate there reaches 90.5%, compared to 61.7% nationally., and 1,146 children suffer from malnutrition severe acute illness in the health district. Women play a central role in agricultural production and household food production, but they cultivate small plots with limited resources.’'Togolese association APECA', created with the support of the town's mayor, has imagined a The answer is based on two highly nutritious local trees., moringa and baobab, grown in gardens at homes. She then met the’Morija association, who passed on to him his method of women's savings groups. Project objectives

  • Improving nutrition and food security for rural households, particularly those of children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Strengthening the economic autonomy of rural women and diversify their sources of income.
  • Strengthening community resilience to climate change, through the restoration of soils and ecosystems.

Activities

  • Community awareness Information sessions were held in six villages, in schools, public squares and markets, on climate change, soil degradation and the nutritional value of moringa and baobab. Community radio broadcasts in the local language complemented these sessions.
  • Creation of gardens : 30 households are selected with the customary authorities then trained and equipped to plant 10 moringa and 10 baobab trees each near their home.
  • Agroecological field school : a demonstration plot allows beneficiaries and local farmers to experiment with techniques for combating erosion and natural soil fertilization.
  • Training in the processing and sale of leaves : drying, powdering and packaging of moringa and baobab leaves, nutritional uses for the family, and marketing techniques for surpluses.
  • Women's savings groups : creation of two groups of about 15 women who save on their own resources, then training in artisanal activities (palm oil, soy cheese, market gardening) and provision of equipment to launch income-generating activities.
