Improving the reception, safety and well-being of vulnerable people in Togo

The Children of Kara

Context

In Togo, the tropical climate is organized around a dry season, from November to May, and a rainy season, from June to October. However, this rhythm is becoming increasingly irregular: dry periods are lengthening, heat waves are becoming more frequent, and the rains, less regular, sometimes take the form of...’violent episodes causing flooding. These changes particularly affect a country where agriculture employs 70% of the working population and where 60% of the inhabitants are under 25 years old. They also have health effects, stagnant water promotes the presence of mosquitoes, while malaria remains the leading cause of medical consultation in the country.

In Kara, in northern Togo, THE Foyer Pierre du Pauvre has been welcoming children and young people who are orphans or from families in precarious situations since 1999. His mission, defined with the Togolese authorities, consists of... to house them, educate them, guide them and support them towards their professional integration. The home currently houses 157 children and young people, and trains apprentices in various trades through its craft cooperative. Open to the Tomdé district, He makes his infirmary and water point available to the inhabitants, It occasionally welcomes people in difficulty and receives interns from the University of Kara. In 2023, a storm tore the roofs off several of its buildings and flooded one of its courtyards., forcing the installation of makeshift walkways to get around. Four apartments have since become unusable, and the wall located 1.25 m from the infirmary shows significant signs of wear and tear. A partner of the home since 2017, the association Les Enfants de Kara has already supported, in particular, a project for sustainable access to drinking water.

Project objectives

  • To contribute to improving the living conditions and health of people accommodated in the home, by strengthening resilience to the impacts of climate change and improving the accommodation infrastructure
  • Strengthen the accommodation capacity and security of the shelter's infrastructure
  • Reducing the health risks associated with malaria in the context of climate change

Activities

  • Reconstruction of 4 dwellings, Following the roofs of the four outbuildings being torn off during a storm in 2023, which resulted in significant deterioration of the buildings (dampness, mold, etc.), these accommodations will be used to house people in difficulty (families or young apprentices) at a moderate rent.
  • Demolition and reconstruction of a wall near the infirmary which threatens to collapse onto the building and passersby
  • Drying of the mango tree courtyard thanks to drainage and the creation of sand layers to stop flooding during the rainy season and limit the presence of mosquitoes
  • Malaria prevention workshops led by the care home's health team for the residents of the center, the staff, and the local community

Direct beneficiaries

  • 157 children and young people, orphans or from vulnerable families, who are students or in vocational training at the Pierre du Pauvre home
  • 26 adults supervising the home
