Potato farming as an entrepreneurial activity

Azhdahak Social Environmental Center NGO (ASEC)

Context

The Gegharkunik region, particularly the wider communities of Vardenis and Gavar, hosts approximately 4,895 forcibly displaced people from Artsakh, primarily living in rural areas where agriculture is the main source of income. Although they have arable land suitable for growing potatoes, a traditional crop well-suited to the climate, the displaced population faces several challenges that limit their agricultural productivity. These challenges include a lack of quality potato seeds, limited professional agricultural knowledge, and insufficient financial resources.

Since the 2020 conflict, the economic situation has deteriorated, leading to increased poverty and unemployment rates among displaced families. Most displaced people are heavily dependent on humanitarian aid and have limited access to sustainable income-generating activities. Potato farming presents a promising entrepreneurial opportunity due to its relatively short growing cycle and well-established local market demand.

Local seed producers also face challenges, as their production is often irregular and of variable quality, impacting overall yields and profitability. The project aims to support these producers by purchasing quality seed potatoes at fair prices to create a mutually beneficial economic cycle. In addition to seed distribution, the project will introduce organic farming techniques and environmentally friendly alternatives such as "Two in One" biohumus, which will promote the sustainability and resilience of agricultural practices.

By strengthening the skills and resources of displaced families and local producers, this project aims to meet immediate economic needs while contributing to the long-term stability of the community. It also promotes social cohesion and self-reliance in a region still recovering from the consequences of conflict and displacement.
