Psychological support for Armenian refugee populations in the Lori region

Pain Without Borders

Context

In the fall of 2023, more than 100,000 civilians fled Nagorno-Karabakh following a new offensive by Azerbaijan. Among them, many families found refuge in the Lori region of northern Armenia. While their basic needs (housing, healthcare, food) have been partially met, mental health remains a major challenge. The trauma of exile, the violence of the events they have experienced, and the uncertainty surrounding their future leave pregnant women, young mothers, children, and adolescents particularly vulnerable to profound psychological suffering.

Present in Armenia since 2001, the Pain Without Borders association has launched a psychosocial support project in the city of Vanadzor and the surrounding rural areas. Deeply rooted in the local community and staffed by an experienced team, the association offers tailored support to various vulnerable populations.

Project objectives

  • Preventing and managing the psychological trauma of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh.
  • Develop access to mental health and psychosocial support services in the Lori region.
  • To provide appropriate psychological care to adults, children, adolescents and women in situations of psychological vulnerability.

Activities

  • Continuing education for 32 health and education professionals.
  • Therapeutic support groups for 100 adults (including at least 30 refugees).
  • Individual and group psychological support for 180 pregnant women and new mothers.
  • Psychosocial support for 120 refugee children and adolescents, in partnership with schools.

Direct beneficiaries

The beneficiaries are mainly refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh: 180 pregnant women or young mothers, 120 children and adolescents, 100 adults, as well as 32 health and education professionals involved in the project.
