Mali faces an unequal distribution of water resources, as well as an asymmetrical distribution across its territory. The country encompasses three climatic zones: the southern Sahara and the Sahel region, where rainfall is very low, and the Sudanese region, an area characterized by dense vegetation thanks to high rainfall. The country therefore possesses significant surface and groundwater resources, but these are unevenly distributed. The government has committed to universal access to drinking water and sanitation by 2030. However, following the conflicts and multifaceted crisis that have affected the country, this priority has likely been relegated to a secondary concern.
Improving the living conditions of disadvantaged populations through sustainable access to drinking water has been the primary focus of Unité du Monde's work since its creation in 2014. Following two drilling campaigns in 2019, Unité du Monde's presence in Mali, and the intervention of the SAMAKE consulting firm, the commune of Dogo in the Sikasso region was identified as needing access to a drinking water source. Agriculture and livestock farming are predominant in the commune of Dogo, but these activities remain entirely dependent on the weather. Furthermore, the distances traveled, primarily by women and girls, to reach water points have a significant impact on their living conditions.
The local authorities of Dogo, Unité du Monde, and the SAMKE firm have therefore established a partnership for the drilling of four boreholes. These will allow the villagers to improve the living conditions of the population.
Through its Microprojects division, the NGO La Guilde, in partnership with the French Development Agency, supports the implementation of microprojects for sustainable development internationally.
