Chad is one of the countries in the world with the most limited access to maternal and child health services. The budget allocated to education represented only 141,300,000 of the national budget in 2019, barely more than 21,300,000 of GDP.
Families in the impoverished Kembian neighborhood, located on the outskirts of Sarh, face numerous difficulties in finding childcare and schooling for their children. Schools, located in downtown Sarh, have very high tuition fees, which puts families at a significant disadvantage. Children also have to endure exhausting daily walks to school. These journeys lead to frequent lateness and absences, poor concentration due to hunger and fatigue from the trip, and a general decline in student motivation.
Some students, particularly girls, therefore stop going to school because of housework or because of unwanted pregnancies and forced marriages.
Since 2013, the Association of Early Childhood Professionals (APPE), in partnership with the Mother and Child Association of Sarh, has been running the "Second School" project. This project has enabled the construction of two buildings in the Kembian neighborhood, one housing a daycare center that prioritizes children born to teenage mothers, and the other a combined first and second grade class. However, families have requested access to a full school cycle that would allow their children to take the competitive entrance exam.
entry to college, as well as access to vocational training, and support and catch-up courses for young single mothers who have lost one or two years.
