CREATION OF AN ORGANIC VEGETABLE GARDEN

Igbala Association

Context

The project area is a rural zone where 901,000 people rely on agriculture for their primary or supplementary income. High inflation, driven by the global geopolitical context, is currently affecting Africa, as it is the rest of the world. As with raw materials, food costs have risen sharply in recent months, particularly the cost of fresh produce. In Africa, as on other continents, we are increasingly witnessing the limitations, both financial and environmental, of using chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in agriculture.

The Igbala center is an orphanage and shelter for underprivileged children in the town of Kambolé, Togo. It is the result of a collaboration since 2010 between the French association Igbala (formerly Graine de Développement) and the local Togolese NGO Solidarité Afrique Développement.
(SAD).

This project aims to launch a market gardening activity at the center, creating a vegetable garden that will be cultivated organically, using an ecological approach. This new activity will allow beneficiaries to diversify their nutritional intake and generate income through the sale of surplus produce. This new model more easily addresses the rainfall problems experienced by the region, which prevent producers from achieving lasting economic stability.

Project objectives

  • To improve and diversify the nutrition of children at the Igbala center.
  • Strengthen the financial autonomy of the Togolese partner.
  • Developing a sustainable agroecological model in Togo.

Activities

  • Start an organic market gardening business on 2000m².
  • Creating a vegetable garden with an irrigation system made possible by the installation of a water tower.
  • Rehabilitating the local chicken coop, installing a fence and incubators.
  • Utilizing the garden with the help of the market gardener, apprentices and saleswomen.
  • To provide training in organic market gardening through educational learning.
  • Training programs, production of organic fertilizers via compost and a chicken coop.

Direct beneficiaries

  • The project will primarily benefit the children at the Igbala reception center, whose diet will be diversified with the addition of fresh, organically grown vegetables. (20 children)
  • It will also benefit the market gardener who will train two apprentices per year.
  • Overall, all new consumers of these products will benefit from complete nutritional intake.
