Promoting better access to water in the commune of Mamou, Guinea

Words and Deeds (PACTES)

Context

Guinea is considered the water tower of West Africa, as the Niger, Senegal, and Gambia rivers originate in this country. These waterways are essential for extensive agriculture and the construction of large hydroelectric projects.
However, despite its abundant natural resources, Guinea faces challenges in accessing drinking water. This situation affects the living conditions of Guineans and hinders the country's economic development. Major projects to provide water to the population of Conakry have begun with financial support from partners.

The Abattoir 2 neighborhood, with a population of 4,087, is located in a disadvantaged and isolated urban area within the municipality of Mamou. Residents, particularly the 2,125 women and girls, face a very difficult situation characterized by a daily lack of water. The public water service is nonexistent in the neighborhood, failing to meet the population's basic needs and address the municipality's development. This drinking water problem is a significant factor in absenteeism among students at the neighborhood school, especially girls, and waterborne illnesses account for more than 50% of the illnesses treated by the local doctor.

Thus, through this project to build a drinking water and sanitation system in the ABATTOIR 2 neighborhood, the PACTES association and PACTES Guinea have decided to help the local population. This project will involve drilling a well and constructing a water tower to supply the various
sectors of the district, training in the proper management and use of water, as well as the organization of awareness campaigns.
