From the early 1980s until 2005, the Casamance independence conflict pitted the separatist rebel forces of the Movement of Democratic Forces (MFD) against government forces. Since 2005, despite ongoing conflict, peace has returned to Ziguinchor. A city of 205,000 inhabitants, it is located in Lower Casamance in southwestern Senegal, 454 km from the capital, Dakar. It remains marked by the development of informal settlements due to a lack of public policies and government commitment.
Thus, Néma 2 College, built in 2008, is located in a working-class neighborhood of Ziguinchor and is one of the three schools under the jurisdiction of the Education and Training Inspectorate (IEF) in the city. It currently accommodates 710 students in 13 different classes within dilapidated and inadequate facilities. Classrooms are overcrowded, with 60 students per class, and each year 100 to 150 children are refused entry to the college due to a lack of space and equipment. Therefore, it is essential to include this college in a plan to expand its facilities and improve its existing infrastructure.
Bretagne Casamance has been active in education in Casamance since 2009 and has decided to support the Néma 2 secondary school by enabling as many students as possible to benefit from a quality education. This project aims to construct three additional classrooms, renovate existing ones, and build several latrines.
