In 1977, in Senegal, a law entrusted the management of leper villages to the Ministry of Health and Social Action, to allow them to integrate into the rest of the country. The leper villages then became VRS, Villages of Social Reintegration, whose management was
entrusted to DAHW Senegal.
Fadiga, a rural village located in eastern Senegal, far from Dakar (700 km) and its sphere of influence, will remain significantly behind in terms of resource development for a long time. The village suffers from a lack of human resources because too few children reach post-secondary education. But it is especially difficult to manage because it is home to the families of former leprosy patients.
The population of Fadiga has tripled in 30 years. Furthermore, the city of Kédougou has expanded considerably, and Fadiga has become a district of Kédougou. As a result, children from neighboring districts have enrolled in the school. These two factors have led to a sharp increase in the number of students, and the infrastructure is no longer adequate. There are only eight permanent classrooms for the primary school and three permanent huts for the preschool. To compensate for this lack of space, the residents of Fadiga build eight straw classrooms every year between the end of the rainy season and the start of the school year. Learning conditions in these makeshift classrooms are very poor, both for the students and the teachers. Student attendance in these temporary classrooms is lower than in the permanent ones. The project also includes the rehabilitation of the existing sanitation facilities on the site.
