Creation of a fish farm in Burkina Faso

Association for Health, Women's Empowerment, Water, the Environment, and Education

Context

In Burkina Faso, there is a significant decline in local biodiversity, threatened by bushfires and the widespread use of pesticides. These factors combine to threaten local flora and fauna with extinction while exacerbating soil and crop destruction.

The lack of profitability of organic food crops being tested by three local associations (ANDEM, CSSN, and Wend-La Sida) necessitates the implementation of an innovative strategy to achieve economic viability. The most vulnerable populations, such as young people but especially women, find themselves isolated in the face of this lack of resources.

Furthermore, in the commune of Kokologo, the population, and particularly women, face significant food and economic hardship. This is why ASAF3E has supported the establishment of a pilot, self-sufficient market garden since its inception.

Through the implementation of soilless fish farming, integrated into the agricultural production of the farm, the project aims to meet the country's expectations regarding the reduction of fish exports and to improve the nutrition of the inhabitants by providing them with quality proteins.

Project objectives

  • Increase the economic and social empowerment of women in Menega through the development of fish farming and market gardening.
  • To improve the nutrition of the inhabitants by providing quality proteins.
  • Job creation and limiting rural exodus through the involvement of young people in their village.

Activities

  • Installation of a fence and a firebreak around the plot.
  • Construction of a borehole and a distribution system for water supply.
  • Training in fish farming techniques and pond maintenance.
  • Construction, installation and stocking of the ponds.
  • Training in the creation of income-generating activities.

Direct beneficiaries

  • The members of the two women's associations and one youth association: 100 women and 50 men. They are the main actors behind the creation of the fish farm on the field.
  • These new livestock farming activities will benefit families and businesses in the region.
