Creation of a second cycle of digital training in Mèkoungo

North-South Partnership Burgundy Mali

Context

In Mali, over two million children aged 5 to 17 are out of school due to insecurity, household poverty, child labor, early marriage, and a lack of local schools. Furthermore, only about a third of the population has access to traditional toilets. Open defecation remains a reality for a large portion of the population, leading to various serious health problems.
Furthermore, although education in Mali has improved over the past decade, significant disparities persist between regions regarding access to school and school completion rates: girls and children from rural families are most at risk of dropping out of school. Indeed, the rural region of Koulikoro/Megatan, where the Mékoungo is located, is becoming increasingly impoverished due to a lack of jobs and educational institutions. Agriculture is essential, but the land is becoming depleted (pesticides, fertilizers, and water scarcity).

Due to the lack of a nearby school, the PNSBM association built a primary school in Mékoungo in 2012. Today, the students enrolled at this school are reaching the end of primary school; however, inequalities with urban areas persist because these children cannot continue their education beyond primary level, cannot enter high school, cannot obtain a diploma, and cannot learn a trade.
Based on this observation, the association undertook, in agreement with the population and local officials, to build and equip a 2nd cycle in 7 villages in Mékoungo, with 4 rooms including one reserved for digital technology, girls'/boys' latrines and access to drinking water.

Project objectives

  • Ensuring equal access to all levels of education, for girls and boys, regardless of their living environment.
  • Acquiring digital skills and enabling young people to develop cultural knowledge.
  • Improving health and preventing disease through the construction of the water tower and awareness sessions.

Activities

  • Construction and development of a second cycle, with fencing, latrines, washbasins with showers, access to water (water tower), electricity and an office/store for the director on dedicated school grounds.
  • Creation of a multimedia room equipped to allow access to new tools for middle school students
  • Implementation of degree programs or programs leading to employment that utilize digital technology
  • Awareness-raising and practical workshops on agroecology, sanitation and hygiene

Direct beneficiaries

  • 400 children and young adults out of school.
