Improving the care of children with motor disabilities

SESEP

Context

The UNICEF report published in 2013, "Early Childhood Development and Disability: Working Paper", with the World Health Organization, already highlighted the importance of early intervention for children with motor disabilities, which is an essential factor in achieving better chances for child development.

In Mauritania, the provision of qualified healthcare services for children with motor disabilities remains underdeveloped, and the training of paramedical professionals is still in its infancy. The latest census indicates that approximately 34,000 people live with a disability, 181 of whom are under 15 years old, a factor contributing to social isolation and stigmatization. Healthcare professionals wishing to specialize in motor disabilities are therefore forced to seek training directly in the field or abroad, given the limited resources available.

Thus, SESEP, present on the ground in Mauritania since 2018 and in close relationship with the Specialized Hospital Center of Nouakchott, the capital of the country, is committed over 3 years to developing within its city a real local network of professionals specializing in the care of children with motor disabilities and to the implementation of practical training adapted to the needs and practices of local teams.

  • To offer children with motor disabilities a better chance of development.
  • Improve local practices in early detection of disabilities and management of child development.
  • Promote the organization of a multidisciplinary consultation for assistive devices.
  • Supporting the creation of a screening and early intervention unit at the Specialties Hospital.
