AGRO JAZ PROJECT

Gazelle Harambee

Context

The project takes place in Benin, specifically in the municipality of Abomey, which comprises seven districts. The rapid population growth currently underway in the central districts is causing a rush towards the outlying districts, including
Zounzomné has a very young population of 8500 inhabitants with significant cultural and religious diversity.

In the region, agriculture is the main activity, including the production of food crops such as oil palm, cashew nuts, citrus fruits, maize, peanuts, beans, and cassava, but there are also some small livestock farms (pigs, goats, and poultry).
In this area, agricultural land is in high demand and difficult to access for young people leaving training who find themselves bewildered in the face of a saturated job market.

This is the case of a group of postgraduate students leading the "JAZ AGRO" project, an agricultural initiative developed by young people from the JAZ (Jeunes Agriculteurs du Zou) association with the support of the Gazelle Harambee association and Midwives Without Borders. Thanks to the ODDACE program resulting from this partnership, one hectare of farmland and free access to a well have been made available. The goal is to develop an income-generating activity through responsible agricultural production that prioritizes natural and organic fertilizers.
