Sanitation and sustainable waste management in the commune of Ogou 1 – Phase 2

Xylm Association

Context

Since 2022, STADD and Xylm have launched the first phase of a sanitation and sustainable waste management project, and initiated awareness-raising actions, the strengthening of the collection service and the development of the sorting service in the commune of Ogou 1.

This project responds to a need expressed by the municipality: solve the problem of waste management. The inhabitants had in fact largely resorted to illegal dumping, incineration, or even disposal in nature. The approach adopted not only allows promote more sustainable waste management, but also to recover this waste and create a sustainable activity (sorting center) capable of promoting the integration of disadvantaged residents.

The project strategy is to develop a sector ranging from pre-collection of waste from local residents to sanitation and sorting, passing through the awareness raising among households and local stakeholders to increase the efficiency and reach of the system. The recyclable waste is then resold to GIP, a social waste recovery enterprise, which sells it and then finances STADD's activities in return, through its CSR policy.

A second phase has been in place since 2023 to strengthen this sanitation and sustainable waste management project in the commune of Ogou 1.
