Literacy and energy in support of apprentices and artisans in Cotiakou

Association Artisanat Solidarité Nord Bénin Nord de France (ASNBNF)

Context

In Benin, in the department of Atacora, where the commune of Cotiakou, access to education remains limited. The primary school completion rate is 44% for boys, 39% for girls and only 27% of girls continue their studies at the secondary level.

In rural areas, illiteracy is an aggravating factor of vulnerability.Early school leaving is very pronounced due to the high proportion of very poor households.

Faced with these difficulties, Learning a trade is an essential path to economic and social emancipation, enabling one to obtain a vocational qualification certificate, the first step towards setting up one's own business or joining a workshop.

In Cotiakou, where more than 651% of the population lives below the poverty line, apprentices are trained directly by artisans for three years, due to the lack of an apprenticeship training center or vocational high school.. The workshops, the only places of learning, are mostly without drinking water and toilets.

Since 2023, the collective of artisans of Cotiakou with the help of’ASNBNF and its partners have put in place a «"School of second chance"» to allow the apprentices are required to take French and mathematics courses during their first two years of apprenticeship.. These courses are crucial for those who have not had access to school or who had to leave prematurely, as they are necessary to obtain qualification certificates and practice their trade independently. Among these apprentices, 70% are girls from the poorest households in the municipality, and they are learning various trades such as sewing, hairdressing, glazing, masonry, mechanics, and welding. These courses are given in a building provided by the district chief, damaged by bad weather, and which is not electrified and lacks essential equipment such as lighting, ventilation, or latrines.

Benin is also experiencing a strong development of domestic solar energy, but due to a lack of knowledge and opportunities, Electricians are not investing in the market for installing small solar power stations., despite their expertise in cabling and equipment installation.
