Drinking water for the population in the Ogou 2 commune

Solidarity and Development

Context

THE village of Okougnohoun is located in the Ogou prefecture and has a population of approximately 900. The village has a six-grade primary school. It does not have access to electricity. The nearest health center is 20 km away, making access to healthcare difficult for residents of the region. The local population is primarily agriculturally oriented, with a varied production including crops such as corn, beans, yams, cotton, and market gardening, as well as cattle, pig, and poultry farming. The area benefits from favorable rainfall, with two rainy seasons each year.

The village of Okougnohoun does not have a drinking water supply. managed by the services of the National Water Authority of Togo. Residents face significant difficulties in obtaining drinking water on a daily basis. Domestic water-related chores and daily needs often lead women and children to undertake the arduous water fetching chore, who must travel an average of half an hour on foot to fetch water from the Yôrô River, a surface source exposed to the village's stray animals. Residents also collect rainwater in basins, which they store for later use.

This lack of a drinking water supply system exposes the population of Okougnohoun to multiple risks. Indeed, the consumption of non-potable water constitutes a source of infectious diseasess. Of growth retardation and signs of malnutrition may be presented by children and infants due to limited access to clean, potable water. This also has consequences on the education of students who participate in the water chore.
